John’s story of hope with kinship care

John is now happily reuniting with his great aunt, uncle, and cousins. They are very excited to have him come to live them.

John (white shirt) got reunited with his great aunt, uncle, and cousins with support of sponsors

John got admitted into institutional care because the sudden illness and death of his mother orphaned him.

The grandmother was in poverty and abandoned John because she was running from creditors and believed he would get a better life and education and care by the Religious (Sisters).

Later, when the social workers found the grandmother, she told the staff that there were no other relatives who could care for the child.

The need for Kinship Care

The maximum stay at the children’s home is age six by law, and the child was already five by the time he got admitted.

We know that children have the best chance to thrive when they grow up in a family.

That’s why Kinyarugonjo launched a kinship care program where extended families take care of children whose parents have died or abandoned them.

Locating John’s extended family

The Kinyarugonjo team started to retrace John’s family to see if they could identify any kin, and they happily located the child’s great uncle and aunt.

The boy’s uncle told the team: “On her deathbed, the boy’s mother bequeathed him and her elder sister. However, the child’s grandmother had chosen to take the boy into institutional care.”

They wanted the child but needed additional support to provide for his care.  The team discovered they needed economic aid to be prepared to take John into their home.

We are thankful for their willingness to welcome him because of the help of generous sponsors.

Today we can ensure John will get to attend school and get nutritional and medical support so he can continue to thrive while he is home with family.

We are grateful to God for the way he has made way for John to be with family kinship care.
